It has started !
We've now been in Canada for 5 days and it's been quite a ride !
We landed in Vancouver on the 27th of June, into a crazy rain storm. Our luggages were soaking wet before we even reach our AirBnB. But Linda, our host, was waiting for us with a hot cup of tea to make us feel better ! This woman is absolutely amazing : she is kind and caring, always giving away great advice and not afraid to let us know when we did something wrong. Her house is beautiful and has an incredible view over Harbor Bay and the city skyline. We started of our trip with some expedition of downtown Vancity : the bay, the infamous Stanley Park, the Aquarium, Chinatown, Gostown, the many beaches... this means a lot of walking around and using our bus/seabus passes all day long. But lucky for us, we didn't mind, and my back stayed strong (I had back surgery a couple of months before we left Belgium). We've truly been enjoying our stay here and love the city and the people. But there's one thing that caught our eyes more than once : the humongous gap between rich people (usually very rich) and the poor living on the street, using drugs and alcohol as a numbing agent to forget it all. And you don't have to go far to meet the harshness of the streets. A couple of blocks away from the main roads and you meet the most unfortunates in a uncomfortable and uneasy way. We've talked about this to the locals and it turns out everyone knows about this but the city doesn't seem to be doing anything to improve the quality of life of the tough neighborhoods. I'm glad that we caught this darker side of the city, but we've decided not to let our mind be affected by the harshness of it all. So we're going to keep on enjoying our stay here and to keep on discovering new things about the Canadian way of life ! Soon it will be Canada Day and we're super exited for it !
